Monolith
A dramatic wide-reaching sculpture, its horizontal extension and branching profile creating an unusually expansive presence.
Monolith opens like a pair of wings. From a low, knotted heart, two long arms reach outward and upward, spanning a full 117 centimetres and matching its height exactly. The effect is dramatic and expansive: a form that claims the space around it as much as the space it occupies. The ends of each arm splay into rough, finger-like tips, as if still searching the soil. Rarely does a natural root produce such a wide, horizontal gesture, and it gives the work an unusual, almost theatrical presence, ideal where a piece is meant to be met at eye level and walked around.
