Sculpted by nature, not by hand
Every work in The Origin Collection began beneath the ground. Formed from what are believed to be Indonesian hardwood root systems, these sculptures were never carved or shaped by hand. Their artist is nature itself, working slowly over years of growth, pressure and weathering.
Lifted from the earth and set upright on their original black steel mounts, each root becomes something more than it once was. Hidden structures turn into rising compositions of line and void. Twists, hollows and arches that once anchored a tree now reach upward with a quiet, monumental presence.
Light changes them. As it moves across their surfaces, shadows gather in the cavities and the grain comes forward, revealing textures that shift between strength and delicacy. No two views are the same, and each work rewards being walked around and looked at again.
These are objects shaped by time. They celebrate nature’s own design, and remind us that some of the most compelling forms are the ones that grew unseen until they were brought into the light.
About the collection
The Origin Collection comprises fourteen individually selected, naturally formed wood sculptures believed to originate from Indonesian hardwood root systems. Their distinctive forms arise from natural processes rather than hand carving.
The original artist or curator selected the forms and installed them on matching black steel mounts as part of their sculptural presentation. Identification references remain on the tops of the steel bases.
The works were held in a private collection in the United Kingdom for more than twenty-five years. They are understood to have previously been exhibited, although the exhibition venue, dates and identity of the original artist or curator have not yet been independently established.
Arcane Form now presents and catalogues the collection while continuing to research its history and provenance.
Dimensions are height × width, in centimetres. Recorded weights are distinguished from estimates. Original base references are preserved where known. No precise wood species, age of the timber or exhibition attribution is asserted without supporting evidence.
Arcane Form welcomes enquiries from collectors, designers, architects and private clients.
